Welcome to the first ever PWIA Advocacy Youth Workshop. We will be presenting several sessions to help you gain a better understanding of how advocacy in the civic arena works and how you can participate.
9:00 am – Registration and breakfast – Come early and network with friends and colleagues
9:30 am – Welcome and opening remarks: Speakers: LeeAnn Petersen to introduce Valarie Davis, VEnterprises; Valarie to introduce Kimberly Herrera, Montgomery College
9:45 am – Civic Engagement 101 – How the government works and the role of the citizen in shaping policy.
11:00 am – Elements of an Advocacy Campaign – So you want to make societal change – where do you start? What tools and techniques will you employ? This is a step by step guide to a successful advocacy campaign.
12:00 pm – Bio break
12:15 pm – Keynote Luncheon – Panel discussion on getting more women and people of color into the pipeline to public service and advocacy.
1:30 pm – Are you the beginning of a movement? – Whether you want to be an advocate in your personal time or have a career representing a cause you are passionate about, here are some steps you can take.
2:30 pm – Dolphin Tank – Break out into groups sorted by issue area (i.e. gun violence, animal welfare, women’s equality etc.) and develop your message, how it will be delivered and expected or desired outcome.
3:30 pm – Bio break and cookie clatch
3:45 pm –Been there Done that – Young Advocates of Distinction – PWIA always concludes the day with BTDT which is a panel discussion of successful people in our field who share their story and give advice to participants.
